Eugenie Russel
Captain, 100 T USCG Master, ASA Sailing Instructor
Captain Eugenie Russell
Eugenie is a fully licensed 100T captain, as well as an ASA and US Sailing coastal and offshore cruising instructor. A sailor, teacher and entrepreneur, she has been sailing for more than thirty years. Being pushed into breaking waves in an Optimist at the age of seven might seem like a rough introduction to sailing to some, but to Eugenie, it was the beginning of a long and exciting career on the water. Eugenie raced, crewed, delivered and moved yachts and sailboats throughout high school and college. The day she graduated from college, she embarked on her professional boating career, sailing and skippering an Oysters and a Nautor Swan 68 through locations around the world.
In San Francisco she focused both on running boats and teaching sailing skills. She has run four sailing schools—the Spinnaker Sailing school in San Francisco, the City of Oakland’s youth sailing program, the J World Sailing School program in Puerto Vallarta, and currently the Vallarta Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program. Eugenie operated private charters, provided sailing instruction, did deliveries, and captained boats while she ran the programs above. She co founded the company J Concierge, a support team for J/Boat owners. Today, in addition to delivering boats worldwide, Eugenie teaches sailing and yachting to anyone who has the desire to let the dock lines go. Coach for the Vallarta Yacht Club’s Junior Sailing Program, she is trains youth to compete in Olympic-level competitions. She speaks French, Spanish and English, and is dedicated to making students understand and love sailing.
Eugenie was recognized for her heroic efforts in safely rescuing her guests and students after the J120 she was skippering collided with a whale in 2009. Annually at the Vallarta Yacht club and several other locations her host a “Safety at Sea” seminar.
Eugenie continues to teach on a J105, a Catalina 38, a Jenneau 40 and also on your own vessel and averages 4-6 ‘ Baja bash per year
The Vallarta Yacht lcub was lucky to have Eugenie Russell on board as the Coach for the VYC Jr. Sailing Program, and we’re not the only ones that are impressed with her talent. In October, “Eugie” was chosen by the Mexican Sailing Federation (FMV) and the Mexican Optimist Association (AMVCO) to be 1 of 4 coaches for the 33 kids of Team Mexico in Optinam 2012. The International Optimist Dinghy Association North American Championships, known as Optinam, is an international event in which 18 countries and 146 sailors participated. This incredible honor is a testimony to her coaching skills and expertise.
